In this installation, I created a diptych in two outdoor spaces of the Art & Music building at Claremont Graduate University (CGU). It was a mediation climate and on what societies choose to commemorate. Also, who gets to decide on what a monument should be.
On one side, Katharina Haberl, a performance doctoral student at CGU, sang an aria from Dvořák’s opera Rusalka. (See video below for her performance).
On the other side, I took over an abandoned bicycle cage. I hung banners consisting of photos I took in 1991 when I was an ESL teacher in Prague. The images were discarded Soviet statues that I found in an alley.
I recreated this outdoor installation for a group show in the East Gallery at CGU.
